Antisemitism in Germany had already been a serious problem long before 7 October 2023. In the aftermath of Hamas’s terrorist attacks, it has become more visible than it had been for some time. Since then, many places in Germany have felt even more threatening for Jewish people. The counselling centres of OFEK e.V. have recorded a dramatic surge in requests for assistance: in the first year following the 7 October massacres, the demand for support in cases of antisemitic violence and discrimination has increased fivefold.
With the rising number of incidents, enhanced protection, crisis management, and psychosocial support for victims are more crucial than ever. At the same time, there is a significant need for expert guidance and preventive measures in schools, universities, and other educational institutions. The Alfred Landecker Foundation is supporting OFEK e.V. in its crucial work in these areas, ensuring that the organisation can continue and expand its efforts. Existing support services for those affected by antisemitism include legal counselling, psychosocial support during legal proceedings, empowerment programmes, and case-based public awareness work. Upon request, OFEK can provide referrals for further counselling, assist organisations with crisis management, and offer workshops and training sessions. OFEK’s work is confidential, free of charge, and tailored to the individual needs of those seeking advice. It considers the specific experiences of Jewish communities, helps individuals cope with the consequences of antisemitic violence, and fosters close cooperation with Jewish institutions, civil society organisations, and support networks. With offices in five federal states and a hotline accessible daily, OFEK is a key point of contact for help and assistance.
