Preserving immediate testimonies of Jewish Holocaust survivors and making them accessible to a broad German-speaking audience – thereby highlighting the diversity of their experiences after liberation.
The German edition of After So Much Pain and Anguish – First Letters after the Holocaust brings together letters written by Jewish Holocaust survivors immediately after their liberation. In their first messages to relatives, friends and acquaintances, they wrote about their own survival, family members who had been murdered, the search for missing loved ones and their first attempts to rebuild their lives.
Edited by Dr Robert Rozett and Dr Iael Nidam-Orvieto, the collection places these personal testimonies in their historical context and highlights the diversity of experiences during and after the Holocaust. The Alfred Landecker Foundation supports the publication of the German edition by Yad Vashem in cooperation with Herder Verlag.
